Transitions: Photo Journeys of Change and Passage
The Veterans Arts Council at VFW Post 1 will exhibit the work of seven veterans that explores the transition from service to photography during the 2019 Denver Month of Photography in collaboration with the Colorado Photographic Arts Center’s Veterans Workshop Series.
Transition can be defined as the process of changing or developing. Transitions are also how chapters of a book or musical verse are linked together. This is a process that all veterans deal with when they leave military service regardless of branch or time served. All veterans transition from a heavily structured lifestyle to a new way of living where there are many options and paths to take.
This exhibit looks at how photography plays a role in the transition of eight veterans from the military and how their personal photographic journey developed. For the veterans in this exhibit the link between chapters in their life is photography. Each veteran’s story and process is different. They range from the stars to the ocean; from nature to architecture; from self-taught to formally educated. Regardless, each individual has a camera in hand, which becomes the common denominator. The photographs in this exhibit explore the paths that each of these photographers has taken, and celebrates the diversity of photography and where it can lead a person.
