TOOTSIES

Tootsies the Nail Shoppe

Chuck O’Brien

Snapshot NYC: 1981-1989
Before Everyone Had a Camera

March 1 - April 5, 2019

Opens First Friday, March 1, 5-9p

Meet the Artist & Reception

Optional: Dress in your NYC 80s

Free and open to the public

Tootsies the Nail Shoppe brings to MoP, Snapshot NYC: 1981-1989 by Chuck O’Brien–a rediscovered collection of photos from an iconic time where Chuck and his wife, Eileen, lived and loved in Manhattan while working in the television business for David Letterman and Saturday Night Live, respectively and to name a few. This show features Chuck's documentation of everyday life in NYC in the 80s– everything from his muse, Eileen, to the contents of their refrigerator and shower.

Tootsies–nail salon by day celebrating 13 years in Denver and 11 years on Tennyson Street aims to support arts in culture in Denver in a variety ways–editorial fashion shows and shoots, showing artwork in the Tootsies location in the Tennyson Street Arts & Culture District, sponsorship of creative events such as Paper Fashion Show, Lucha Libre & Laughs, Denver Art Museum’s CultureHaus, donations to arts, culture & education institutions and by employing a team of creatives who are able to work a flexible schedule that allows them to pursue their creative dreams.

About the Artist:

Chuck O’Brien is a photographer by nature and was a image manipulator by trade. As he left New York City in 1989, many of his friends and colleagues in the television business asked for copies of his snapshots of the city. These images started in 1981 when he was given a Canon T-50 by his wife as a birthday gift, the year he arrived to work as an editor of television network programming at 30 Rock. Working as a TV editor, his time off from the moving image business was spent on his passion to capture in still images, the world of NYC in the 80’s...a time and place that was so unique he could sense the need to document it. Little did he realize that his images would become the makings of many iconic moving image stories - Seinfeld, Working Girl, When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail…to name just a few. With this exhibition Chuck hopes to share some of the images he loved capturing then, with a new generation now, who sees the 80’s in New York, as a glamorous, glitzy time when Studio 54 reigned, Andy Warhol had his factory, Keith Haring was drawing in chalk on blacked out subway billboards and Times Square was still filled with the bold and bawdy images that have long vanished from the Great White way.

EVAN ANDERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Another Land

Evan has had the great fortune over the last fifteen years or so to travel with his extended family to various countries around the Mediterranean Ocean. Having a camera on these trips challenges Anderman to find the interesting photograph of a place or event. Just as important, it makes him look in a different way to discover something that he might not otherwise see and learn about the people he is visiting. From Tunisia to Turkey, Croatia to Italy, the great part about traveling is seeing the differences, and the similarities, in these various cultures, and in doing so learning about our own culture.

NINE Dot ARTS
Art Consultants

“We are a corporate art consulting firm that uses the power of art to transform environments into experiences. Art has that power!”

Founded in December 2009 by Martha Weidmann and Molly Casey, NINE dot ARTS grew out of the premiere regional art consulting firm McGrath & Braun. Martha’s and Molly’s opposite yet complementary strengths created the foundation for a dynamic partnership built on integrity, transparency, collaboration and a passion for art. With an entire staff formally trained in the arts, NINE dot ARTS’ expertise includes studio practice, art history, arts administration and creative writing.

The NINE dot ARTS name is taken from the classic brain teaser known as the nine dot puzzle. The challenge is to connect all nine dots using only four straight lines without lifting the pen off the paper. Most people think within the perceived grid. The key is to think outside the box.

DADA

www.denverart.org

The Denver Art Dealers Association (DADA) was founded in 1984 and re-established in 2001. This partnership of art dealers and fine art galleries provides a unified voice on issues of mutual concern; to advance standards of excellence, raise awareness and stimulate growth in the visual arts throughout the front-range.

DADA is comprised of independently operated art marketing venues, private dealers and their friends, whose primary business is the marketing of unique and original art. The association seeks to promote the highest standards of connoisseurship, scholarship and ethical practices. It encourages growth an excellence in the visual arts through education, advocacy and promotion. Exhibitions by members provide the public with the first glance of new works by young and establishing artists as well as presenting work by neglected artists and widely known masters

RECYCLEDPHOTO

RecycledPhoto
EASY ON THE WALLET, GOOD FOR OUR PLANET

RecycledPhoto is one of the easiest ways to turn your old photo equipment into cash. We pay top-dollar for used gear, then refurbish and resell to photographers, collectors, schools and non-profit organizations that still value and use older photographic equipment. Most of the equipment is re-sold in the United States, however, a portion is shipped to overseas markets that still value film-based or older digital camera equipment.

Whether you are an individual with older gear and need cash, a professional photographer that needs to unload older equipment or transition to a new system, an estate with a large collection of cameras, or a school or police department that needs to upgrade their equipment, RecycledPhoto can help.

We love photography and specialize in all photographic equipment, including older film-related equipment or state-of-the-art digital cameras. Let us know what you need to sell or what you are looking for.

For donations and drop-off:
You may drop-off any old equipment at any Mike’s Camera Store throughout Colorado and California. Simply attach your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address information with your equipment so we may be able to contact you.

MOP HISTORY

Short
Month of Photography Denver was first started in 2004. I was inspired by the Houston FotoFest. home.fotofest.org

The Lead Up
I love salons, I formed the Denver Salon group in the 90s in our living room which went on to shows in museums and NYC.
And a Salon online called FAB the Fine Art Photographers Board,  where we did early shows online and in galleries in the mid-90s we called " Off The Highway ".  I am still very close to many in that early
internet crew that have gone to great fame.

Things happen with power in numbers be it a art gathering / movement
or a group of galleries in association with the same goal. I was
inspired by the Houston FotoFest in the mid 1990s.. Houston goes nuts
for photography every two years..portfolio reviews with curators
coming from all over the world ..lectures and panels and exhibitions
all over the city .. I came very close to the directors Fred Baldwin
and Wendi Watriss. They were inspired in the 1980s by the grand daddy of all photo festivals in Arles France. www.rencontres-arles.com

We also formed another group ..haha another group !!
and I helped them start the Festival of Light  an association of all the
photography festivals around the world www.festivaloflight.net

Around that time I was the director of MCA Denver in the late 1990s I would share our photography exhibitions with Houston and they sent shows to us…

The Start
Around 2000 I started rounding up galleries to show photography together in Denver for a month around SPE (Society of Photographic Education) conferences .. because they had the portfolio reviews and panels and lectures. I rounded up galleries to exhibit photography during the conference. In 2004 I started MoP as its own multi-faceted event and starting coordinating it all myself, all the exhibition events and portfolio reviews and lectures. All the galleries and museums responded very well and its been growing dramatically every two years. Last year we had over 180 venues! We will probably get close to that as we spread further out up and down the front range.

The Today
2017 - 2019 The Colorado Photographic Art Center has taken a lead role with MoP. CPAC has successfully taken over the administration of the portfolio reviews to where it is now a world class event and center piece of the Month of Photography.
