The photographs in UNDERCURRENTS have been described as “taking the temperature” of the United States.
Traveling by car and looking for images is a bit like eavesdropping on a conversation or looking through a stranger’s window. Without staying in a place for a period of time it is impossible to gain a deep understanding of the issues facing a community. However, it is possible to document visual clues that offer insight about the state of a place, the concerns of the residents and the hopes and sometimes failed dreams of those inhabitants. One universal theme encountered in every state is patriotism, expressed in different ways, by the use of red, white and blue.
Goldstein’s art practice includes a history of addressing political issues through images and installation. Many of the photographs in UNDERCURRENTS are inherently political. This is not an exhibit about the current President and administration, but many of the images tell part of the story of how the country has become so fractured and divided. Ironically the subjects in some of the photographs act both to unify as well as divide depending upon the viewer’s perspective.
